Our Process Contains 4 Steps for Your Professional Paving Needs.
Grade
The three considerations in grade are:
1. Avoid water problems by ensuring proper slope.
2. Removing any vegetation that may exist.
3. Removing sufficient subgrade to ensure the depth required for the base and asphalt.
Base
The base, similar to the foundation of a home, is crucial for a professional paving job. If the base is done properly, your asphalt will last for years to come. This is where the majority of problems with cracking occur. If there is not enough basestone the asphalt will give way and eventually crack. The amount of basestone will vary from job to job depending on the conditions.
Loose stone or gravel should not be used as a primary base for your paving needs. Loose stone and gravel can move during and after the paving process. This can cause separation and cracking of the asphalt. To avoid this, Bracken Paving uses pugmix as our primary basestone whenever possible. This is a mixture of rock, lime dust and water, which when dried, provides a firm base for asphalt.
Asphalt
The asphalt is applied once the basestone is laid to proper grade. There are three major considerations for laying the asphalt:
1. Type of asphalt
2. Sufficient compaction
3. Proper depth
Two types of asphalt are used:
-Binder is an asphalt that has 3/4" rock and is used for heavier traffic areas or steep grades due to it's strength.
-Topping is a finer mix of asphalt used for light traffic, resurfacing and on top of binder. Topping gives a smoother and tighter surface which resists water penetration, allowing for extended use.
We will look at your situation and help you decide what type of asphalt will be suitable for you.
Maintenance
Bracken Paving recommends a coal tar emulsion pavement sealer. A qualified product, such as coal tar emulsion, doubles the life of asphalt, therefore protecting your investment for years to come. A coal tar emulsion sealer stops weather damages, prevents oxidation from the sun, resist gas, oil, salt and restores the original appearance. To properly ensure the long life of your driveway, the first application of sealer should be applied within 6 to 12 months of paving and then repeat coat should be applied every 3 to 5 years.
